You know the shape. Your solos keep landing in the same place.

You start a backing track, go to your familiar pentatonic position, and play. A few bars in, you’re reaching for the same bend and the same phrase you played last time. You’d like to move somewhere else on the neck, but you’re unsure where to land or how to get back.

Working with students in private lessons and at retreats, I kept seeing players get stuck in familiar pentatonic shapes. It’s come up in my community streams too, and those conversations helped shape this course.

We’ll use root notes as reference points and build small groups of notes around them. You’ll learn how those groups connect, giving you more places to take a phrase. The boxes you already know are useful, and we’ll build on them as we go.

Throughout the course, we’ll learn licks and break down what makes them work. Then you can experiment with the pieces and start making them your own.

 

What You’ll Work On

Connect the positions you already know.

We’ll use slides and extended pentatonic patterns to connect different parts of the neck. I’ll show you the patterns built from E-string and A-string roots, where they overlap, and how to move between them.

Find your way with root notes.

You’ll learn how to find the same root note in different places on the neck, giving you familiar starting points for your solos. We’ll build small groups of notes around those roots so you have familiar ideas to work with in different positions.

Take one lick to more places.

You’ll move phrases through two and three octaves by finding the root in each spot. I’ll walk you through the fingering adjustments so you can try the same idea in different parts of the neck.

Add some blues flavor.

We’ll work on double stops, expressive bends, and extra notes that add color to your pentatonic licks. You’ll hear how mixing major and minor sounds gives a phrase a different feel, with examples in E, A, G, C, and B.

Follow the chords and explore new sounds.

I’ll show you how to move a blues lick through the chord changes. We’ll also use melodic arpeggio ideas, built from the notes of a chord, to give you more options over minor and major grooves.

Start making the licks your own.

Take a piece of a phrase, repeat it, change it, or move it to another octave. We’ll work on combining ideas so you can build your own phrases from the vocabulary you’re learning.

 

Who This Is For

This course is for you if you know at least one minor pentatonic shape and tend to stay parked in it when you solo. If you’re still fairly new to lead guitar, don’t let the intermediate title scare you off. Knowing one pentatonic shape gives us a place to start.

Some comfort with bends, slides, hammer-ons, and pull-offs will help. I’ll break down the techniques as we work through the lessons.
