Modes Master Class

This is the largest, most comprehensive guitar course on MartyMusic.com! The Modes Masterclass course is over 15 hours and 74 pages of tabs/diagrams containing step by step instruction explaining modes, where they come from, and how to use them. Modes are just fancy sounding words that can be a bit intimidating if you are just starting out.

Modes are derived from the Major Scale and its chords of the key. When you shift the tonal center of the major scale and use one of it’s other notes as the root, you are now playing in a “mode” of that major scale.

Each mode has a unique sound and emotional characteristic but technically you can do this all by knowing the major scale and it’s 5 shapes up and down the fretboard, definitely not as hard as it sounds!
  • The Major Scale (Ionian) Tends to have a happy sound
  • Dorian Mode is the "Santana" sounding scale
  • Phrygian Mode is used a lot in Flamenco style playing
  • Lydian Mode is the main scale used in movie scores, especially sci-fi and animation
  • Mixolydian Mode is the go to mode for bluesy riffs and jamband soloing
  • Aeolian Mode is the natural minor scale and has the classic “sad” sound
  • Locrian Mode is the 7th mode and is rarely used in mainstream music but it has a very “sinister” jazzy sound.
